With 14 innings of work, 16 strikeouts and 189 pitches from her left arm, Kaia Parnaby rewrote the University of Hawaii softball record books.
Parnaby set the school’s single-season mark for victories Friday as the Rainbow Wahine swept Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif, winning 4-0 and 3-1.
With her 37th and 38th complete games of the season, Parnaby (33-4) tied and then surpassed the mark set by Melissa Coogan in 2003 to help Hawaii (36-8, 13-1 Big West) take a 2-1/2 game lead in the league standings.
The senior lowered her ERA to 1.33 and was backed by nine hits in both ends of the doubleheader against the Mustangs (18-28, 7-10).
Kayla Wartner collected two hits in each game, including a go-ahead RBI double in the fifth inning of the second contest that put the Wahine ahead for good, and Sharla Kliebenstein and Jessica Iwata each hit home runs on the day.
Parnaby notched her 11 shutout of the year in the first game, striking 10 and walking four in a three-hitter.
Warner singled in the first and scored on Keiki Carlos’ RBI triple, and Kliebenstein made the score 2-0 in the second with her 10th home run of the season. In the seventh, Wartner singled, Carlos doubled and both scored on Leisha Liilii’s two-run single.
Wartner, Carlos, Liilii and Jazmine Zamora were each 2 for 4.
Chloe Wurst (10-13) took the loss in a complete game, yielding two walks with seven strikeouts.
Parnaby wasn’t as overpowering during her four-hitter in the nightcap, but she was more efficient, throwing 57 of 76 pitches for strikes. Parnaby allowed an unearned run in the first inning, striking out six without walking a batter.
Iwata finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs. The shortstop’s fifth home run of the season tied the game in the fourth, and she singled in an insurance run after Wartner’s double in the fifth.
In 4 1/3 innings for the Mustangs, Jordan Yates (5-12) allowed nine hits, three runs and didn’t walk a batter and struck out one. Wurst threw 2 2/3 innings of perfect relief.
The NCAA Division I leaders in victories, Parnaby is two shy of the Big West record.
Hawaii wraps up its seven-game road trip with an 11 a.m. HST game against Cal Poly.
